The venue sets your date, your guest limit and often half your budget, so choose it first. Work out a realistic guest count before touring.
Venue Types
- Ballrooms and banquet halls: all-in-one, often with in-house catering; less decor needed.
- Hotels: rooms for guests on site; packages with fixed menus.
- Barns and farms: rustic charm; you may need to rent tables, restrooms, lighting and a tent.
- Gardens and estates: beautiful photos; always ask for the rain plan.
- Restaurants: great food and value for smaller weddings.
- Wedding chapels and courthouses: simple and affordable ceremonies.
Capacity
A venue's maximum is usually for standing guests. For a seated dinner with a dance floor, plan on about 10–15 square feet per guest more than the "max" suggests, and ask to see a floor plan for your number.
All-in Price
Ask for a sample invoice that includes the rental fee, food and drink minimum, service charge, tax, security, cleaning and any outside-vendor fees. Compare venues on this total, not on the headline price.
