Most wedding vendor problems come from things nobody asked about until the contract was signed. Take these questions to every bridal shop you meet, compare the answers side by side, and get the important ones written into the contract.
When to book: couples usually book bridal shops and formalwear stores about 9–12 months ahead for gowns, earlier for peak-season Saturdays (May–June and September–October).
The Questions
- Do I need an appointment, and is there a fee?
- What is the price range of gowns you carry?
- How long does ordering take, and is there a rush fee?
- Are alterations done in-house, and roughly what do they cost?
- How many fittings are included?
- What is your deposit, refund and exchange policy?
- Do you offer sample or off-the-rack sales?
- For suits and tuxedos: is it rental or purchase, and when is pickup and return?
Tips
- Order a gown 9–12 months ahead; most are made to order.
- Budget separately for alterations, which often cost several hundred dollars.
- Bring the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear to fittings.
Before You Sign
- Get the date, start and end times, exact services, total price and payment schedule in writing.
- Read the cancellation, postponement and refund terms.
- Check that the business name on the contract matches the one you researched.
- Pay deposits by credit card where possible, for buyer protection.
